Mangosteen Trees

Purple mangosteen trees: They have only female flowers and pollen fertilization is not required. Their fruits contain up to three seeds which are composed of reproductive femal flesh. These seeds could still germinate when to be cut apart. The purple mangosteen trees are so slow-growing that they have rarely fruit before they reach ten years old. Additionally, the cultural requirements are stringent, further reducing the supply of fruit.

Yellow mangosteen trees: They are much easier trees to grow and bring to fruiting than the purple mangosteen. There are several species of yellow mangosteen. They include the mundu (G.dulcis), the kochin goroka (G. xanthochymus) and the asam gelugur (G. atroviridis). However, they taste extremely sour. People usually cook them with plenty of sugar to counter the acidity and make them to be an excellent pie.
